Requirements:
Truck Tractor-Trailer Mechanic

An applicant must have a high school diploma or GED and 2 years of training/experience as a truck tractor-trailer mechanic. Alternatively, an applicant must have a high school diploma or GED and 12 months of vocational training as a truck mechanic from a vocational school. 

Job Duties:

  • Servicing, repairing, adjusting, and testing parts of tractor-trailer such as engine and drivetrain, multi-gear transmissions, and axle configurations, truck chassis and structural frame, such as steel rails and modular structure;
  • Servicing, repairing, adjusting, and testing semi-trucks’ suspension systems, brake systems, air compressors, foot valves, relay valves, brake chambers, slack adjusters, and spring brakes to ensure safe and proper operation;
  • Servicing, repairing, adjusting, and ensuring that the semi-trucks’ diesel fuel systems and electrical systems deliver fuel to filters and injectors, monitor, replace DEF levels, ensure batteries are functional, supply starting power, alternators recharge, and power the electronics. Ensure that electrical systems, cameras, and sensors are operational; clean terminals, test voltage, and inspect wiring to avoid surprise failures;
  • Servicing, repairing, adjusting, and testing the radiator, water pump, fan clutch, thermostat, and exhaust systems to ensure that the cooling and exhaust systems are clean and operational to avoid engine overheating and EPA penalties;
  • Servicing, repairing, adjusting, and testing wheels and tires, checking tread depth, air pressure, and alignment;
  • Keep trucks’ mirrors clean, lights working, and sensors calibrated to prevent accidents and to comply with Department of Transportation requirements.
